How Shopify fees work

Every Shopify merchant pays Shopify in two ways: a monthly subscription for the plan they're on, and a payment processing fee on every sale. Knowing the true blended cost matters because the "cheapest" plan on paper isn't always cheapest in practice once payment processing kicks in.

1. The plan subscription

Shopify offers four tiers: Basic, Grow (renamed from "Shopify" in 2026), Advanced, and Plus. Basic drops from $39 to $29/mo on annual billing. Grow goes from $105 to $95/mo annual. Advanced goes from $399 to $360/mo annual. Plus starts at $2,300/mo with no annual discount and most rates are negotiated.

2. Payment processing fees (Shopify Payments)

Shopify Payments is Shopify's built-in payment processor. Rates step down as you move up plans — Basic merchants pay 2.9% + 30¢ per online standard card transaction, Grow drops to 2.7% + 30¢, Advanced to 2.5% + 30¢, and Plus to 2.25% + 30¢ (or a negotiated rate). In-person POS rates are slightly lower across the board (2.6%, 2.5%, 2.4%, 2.4% + 10¢).

3. Third-party transaction fees

If you use a payment gateway other than Shopify Payments (PayPal, Stripe direct, Authorize.net, etc.), Shopify adds a transaction surcharge on top of whatever the gateway charges. This is 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced, and 0.2% on Plus. This is often the biggest hidden cost for merchants not on Shopify Payments.

When to upgrade plans

Upgrade when the savings in payment processing exceed the difference in plan cost. Going from Basic ($29 annual) to Grow ($95 annual) costs $66/mo more but saves 0.2% on every online sale using Shopify Payments — break-even is at roughly $33,000/mo in revenue. Above that, the upgrade pays for itself.

Frequently asked questions

What fees does Shopify charge?

Shopify charges two main fees: a monthly subscription fee for your plan, and payment processing fees on each sale. If you use a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify also adds a per-transaction fee that ranges from 0.2% (Plus) to 2% (Basic) depending on your plan.

Are there any additional fees beyond the plan + processing?

A few situations add fees: POS Pro is $89/mo per location, marketplace order syncing past the first 50/month costs 1% capped at $99/mo, and apps from the Shopify App Store have their own subscriptions. Shipping label purchases and Shopify Capital financing are usage-based, not flat fees.

Are Shopify Payments fees the same as Stripe?

Shopify Payments is powered by Stripe under the hood, but the rates merchants see are set by Shopify and tier by plan. Basic merchants pay 2.9% + 30¢ per online standard card transaction; Plus merchants pay 2.25% + 30¢ or a negotiated rate. Premium cards (Amex, business cards) and international cards have higher rates.

Can I avoid Shopify transaction fees?

Yes — by using Shopify Payments as your payment processor, you avoid the additional per-transaction fee that Shopify charges on third-party gateways. You still pay the credit card processing fee (e.g., 2.9% + 30¢), but the extra 0.2–2% transaction surcharge goes away.

When should I upgrade my Shopify plan?

Upgrade when the savings on payment processing exceed the difference in monthly plan cost. For example, moving from Basic ($29 annual, 2.9% + 30¢) to Grow ($95 annual, 2.7% + 30¢) costs $66/mo more but saves 0.2% per online sale using Shopify Payments — break-even is at roughly $33,000/mo in revenue. Use the calculator above to find your specific break-even point.

Does annual billing actually save money?

Yes for Basic, modestly for Grow/Advanced, not at all for Plus. Basic drops from $39/mo to $29/mo (~26% off). Grow drops from $105 to $95 (~10% off). Advanced drops from $399 to $360 (~10% off). Plus has no annual discount. Payment processing rates don't change with billing cycle.

What happened to the 'Shopify' plan — is it now called Grow?

Yes. Shopify renamed the middle tier from 'Shopify' to 'Grow' in 2026. Pricing and features adjusted at the same time — it's now $105/mo (or $95 annual) with a 2.7% + 30¢ online card rate. If you're on the legacy 'Shopify' plan, your dashboard may still show that name until your next renewal.

Does this calculator include app subscription fees?

No. Many Shopify merchants spend more on apps than on Shopify itself. This calculator only covers Shopify's own fees (plan + payment processing). To get a complete cost picture, add up your monthly app subscriptions separately.

Squeezing margin where it matters

Shopify fees are unavoidable — but recurring revenue from subscriptions changes your unit economics enough that fees stop being the bottleneck. Ongoing Subscriptions turns one-time buyers into repeat revenue without locking you into a churn nightmare.
