Proactive expiring payment method notifications

Automatically notify subscribers when their payment method is about to expire — before it causes a failed billing attempt. Fewer failed charges, fewer lost subscriptions.

Details

When a subscriber's credit card is approaching its expiration date, Ongoing Subscriptions now automatically sends them an email letting them know. The notification goes out before the next billing attempt, giving subscribers time to update their payment details through the subscriber portal.

The email template is fully customizable from your Settings page, with shortcodes for the customer's name, card brand, last four digits, expiration date, and a direct link to the subscriber portal where they can update their payment method.

What merchants can now do

  • Automatically email subscribers whose payment method is expiring soon
  • Customize the notification email template with built-in shortcodes like [card_brand], [card_last_four], and [card_expiry_date]
  • Include a direct link to the subscriber portal so customers can update their payment method in one click
  • Reduce failed billing attempts caused by expired cards without any manual effort

Why this matters

Expired payment methods are one of the top reasons subscription billing fails. Each failed charge means lost revenue, a frustrated customer, and often a cancelled subscription. By reaching out before the card expires, merchants can protect their recurring revenue and keep subscribers active — without having to manually track expiration dates or chase down customers. It turns a reactive problem into a proactive solution.
